Let’s just fix hiring. Why we’re building allUP.

It all started for me when I got laid off from a job I really loved. It took more than a year of applying every day before I found a new role. With every resume I threw into the job application blackhole, my hate for everything that comes with applying to jobs multiplied. It was all such bullshit. Stressing if I was using the right keywords on my resume and wondering if I would ever even get a chance to prove myself.

Eventually I did land a job, and a few years later I became the one making hires. All I cared about was finding the right people to build an amazing team, but everything about the process of doing that was so painful. Scanning jargon-filled resumes until my eyes bled. Staring at the clock when a couple minutes into an interview I knew it wasn’t a fit. Career growth shouldn’t mean going from the person who hates applying to jobs to becoming the manager that dreads dealing with hiring.

Hiring sucks for literally everyone. As part of building allUP, I talk to candidates every day. It’s heartbreaking to hear their stories and almost impossible to fully comprehend their stress and uncertainty. When I talk to CEOs and hiring managers, they’re not happy either. They’re drowning in piles of AI-generated resumes that all look the same, while stretched thin from not being able to find the right people to fill critical roles.

Very few things impact our lives more than where we work and who we work with. We shouldn't have to accept the idea that something so important is just permanently broken.

We're building the human hiring system for the AI era. We are obsessed with finding a way to connect talent and opportunity so that everyone wins. As a society, we are capable of building mind-blowing technology (SpaceX rockets, Waymo self-driving cars, and all the crazy AI tech launching every day). There's no excuse for us not having a way to ensure everyone's full capabilities are seen and everyone gets their shot at opportunities they deserve.

AI should fix this, but so far it’s mostly made things worse. To be competitive, candidates use AI to match a resume to a job description and apply to more roles. When everyone is doing this, the system breaks: companies can’t figure out who is a fit and it devolves into the bot-vs-bot mess we are all dealing with. The resume was always a flawed signal for abilities, but AI has collapsed what little signal it had.

Every day, we are working to build the system we wish we had as both candidates and hiring teams. We’re creating systems and tools that leverage AI to help candidates truly showcase their individual talents, instead of burying them or filtering them out. More than anything we are motivated by the impact of seeing an awesome person land a job with a great company. We are still early in our mission, but we are excited to start sharing more about what we are building and the impact that it’s having.
